‘Nothing emboldens sin so much as mercy.'

— Act III, Scene 5

Performed in German with English subtitles, as part of the 2012 Globe to Globe Festival.

The Bremer Shakespeare Company have staged over 40 Shakespeare productions in their home on the western bank of the Weser in Bremen, Germany, and have toured throughout Europe and Asia. In 1993, they even performed on what was (at the time) the building site of the Globe Theatre. In 2012, they returned to the Globe with a bold, wild and bouncy production of Timon of Athens.

Synopsis

Timon is a prosperous man and generous to his friends. His loyal servant, Flavius, worries about Timon's reckless spending. Flavius’ fears are realised when Timon's creditors demand their money back but he cannot pay them. Timon asks his friends to lend him some money but all refuse. Disillusioned by his false friends and human nature he flees to the wilderness, where he wallows in misanthropy and hatred for the city he once loved.
