'O, now, for ever, Farewell the tranquil mind; farewell content.'

— Act III, Scene 3

A cast including Eamonn Walker, Tim McInnerny and Zawe Ashton feature in the 2007 production of Shakespeare’s devastating tragedy.

Synopsis

The republic of Venice employs Othello, a Black Captain of the Venetian army, to defend its overseas territories against the Turks. But for all his military success, Othello remains an outsider in the city, despite his status. He becomes the object of systemic racism, a victim of envy and mistrust. As the Turkish threat gathers and Venetian forces are despatched to Cyprus, Iago, a junior officer secretly enraged by his lack of promotion, exploits Othello's position and trusting nature, manipulates his perception and drives the Venetian captain towards a deed that brings about one of Shakespeare’s most tragic endings.
